Linguistics 178
Mathematics of Language and Linguistics
Handouts:
Readings:
The book manuscript is evolving every day, but you are only
"responsible" for the content of chapters when they are
assigned. The individual chapter links are to those chapters. The final
link to the entire manuscript is here just in case you are curious about
the general form of readings later in the term or curious about how the
material has evolved over the semester.
Links:
- Interesting dialect survey
data
- Free SIL
IPA font. This is useful for drawing the special characters
for sounds if you use a typical Mac or Windows word processor.
- Free TIPA IPA
font for LaTeX users.
- Style sheet for doing proofs for LaTeX
users.
- JFLAP: a wonderful
free tool for playing with finite automata, though the
formalism is a little different from our text. (You may
need to install Java on Windows
machines separately.)
- Graphviz: Nice
free graph visualization software. You can use this to
create pretty FSAs and lots of other stuff.
- Finomaton:
free software for drawing FSAs for LaTeX users.
- R: a very nice
free tool for playing with statistics and probability.
This is very powerful software...not for the faint of heart.
